Here are photographs of a very special miniature chair, sent to us by our friend Dirk Dowald from his personal collection. It is the Arnold Comeback no. 041 chair. Designed in 1956/57, the full-scale Comeback chair was manufactured by L&C Arnold, the original manufacturers of Mart Stam’s seminal W1 cantilever chair in 1927 in Schorndorf.

The Comeback chair makes a comeback: the manufacturers, now called L&C Stendal, recently re-issued the 1:1 Comeback chair. Stendal still specialise in the steel frame furniture that L&C Arnold started with the W1 chair; indeed they continue to produce the Arnold Bauhaus Collection, which includes early designs by Marcel Breuer and Horst Hartmann.

The re-edition Comeback chair is manufactured using a bright chrome-plated 18-mm diameter tubular steel frame of 4 legs, which is stackable to six high. Seat and backrest are moulded laminated beechwood, stained in natural colour. The Comeback chair was designed in-house by L&C Arnold/Stendal.

Mr Dowald bought the miniature Comeback chair for €20 (the best €20 Dirk ever spent, IMHO!) in November 2009 at the Dusseldorf Design Exchange. No wooden box or information booklet was included and it only came with 3 glides. Dirk added the fourth glide by using a spare one from an Eames DSR miniature, which he made smaller to fit the chair.

It is possible to spot the make-shift glide if you study the photographs - it's on the front right leg (as you are facing the chair). Dirk has been reliably informed that the 1:6 scale miniature Comeback chair was made by Vitra Design Museum circa 1992. Possibly it was a prototype or perhaps made for L&C Stendal - but it is not part of the Miniatures Collection.

Dimensions: W/H/D: 67-mm/130-mm/67-mm

As always, many thanks to Dirk Dowald (www.miniaturstuhl.de) for sharing this special miniature chair with us. Thanks Dirk.
